Page 1 of 7 The AVR Butterfly is a great way to learn how to program microcontrollers. It is a demo board for the Atmega169P and contains a LCD, piezo speaker, joystick, and temperature sensor. Best of all, it does not need a programmer in order to be programmed. Instead, the AVR Butterfly was pre-programmed at the factory with a BootLoader program. By communicating with the boot loader, you can load your own original programs onto the Butterfly without an expensive program. All you need is to attach the AVR Butterfly to your computer's RS232 port or to a USB to RS232 converter. To set up your AVR Butterfly from your line following Kit, solder the female header to the correct pin breakouts. Each set of pads has a corresponding female header. Use the polarized 3 pin male header for the line of 3 pads. Make sure the bottom of your header is flat against the Butterfly board. (Solder one pin , check to see if it is flat, then solder the rest). In the end, your Butterfly should like picture below.
